This Week in Canadian EdTech MindshareTV [Recorded[ Podcast with Eric Sheninger as we explore his new book Disruptive Thinking in Our Classrooms: Preparing Learners for Their Future

Dear Thought Leader,

Happy Friday!  Yesterday I was honoured to connect on MindshareTV with one of the most sought after education leaders on the speaker/workshop circuit Eric Sheninger for a deep dive into his new book, Disruptive Thinking in the Classroom: Preparing Learners for their Future

If nothing else, take 22 minutes to have a listen as it is packed with practical strategies for educators and leaders. A former principal, Eric really takes a pragmatic approach to professional learning and has a real pulse for the emerging needs of leaders, teachers, & learners. His inspiration is comes from speaking directly to those in the trenches, principals and teachers that drive his passion and desire to help make change happen.

As I was driving to the office this week from my 7am hockey game all energized for the day. I thought about the notion of 'Fit Leadership.' So, I googled it. Lots of inspiring people writing and speaking about this notion. It's not new. However, given the pressures we are all feeling in education today, everyone, including students need an outlet. I'm hearing from parents and students that there are little extra curriculars going on in schools. College and university students can't access their facilities. It's time to get back in the saddle! I can guarantee you that spending 30 minutes a day doing some form of physical activity will energize you to be at your best. And weather should be no excuse! I'm once again signing up this year for the volunteer ice rink making team at our local park. Yes, I took full advantage of skating and playing hockey daily last winter. One of the COVID silver linings.

I'd love for you to share your COVID silver lining that's enriched your life? I'd like to feature inspirational leaders and teachers on a weekly basis with your tips! Please do share!

I hope you enjoy this week's Top 10 curated news stories that really provide a national lens and pulse for some of the incredible innovation happening across our vast Canadian landscape and beyond.

Future-proof learning for ALL kids!

Empower learners to think disruptively in your classroom or school.
The world has and continues to change in ways that are difficult to predict. Regardless of the forces at hand educators play a pivotal role in preparing students for success now and in the future.
Eric Sheninger makes the compelling case that the best way to do this is to create a disruptive thinking culture in the classroom and beyond.
Broken into four parts, this book combines stories, insight from thousands of school visits, practical strategies, research, and examples from classrooms to assist educators transform their practice. Each chapter ends with a “Disruptive Challenge” that encourages readers to actively apply concepts in their practice.

1. OECDedu International Early Learning and Child Well-being Study
OECDedu, November 16, 2021

The OECD’s International Early Learning and Child Well-being Study asked over 4 500 five-year-olds what they liked most about their kindergarten or school. These children were very clear in their responses. They were overwhelmingly positive about being at kindergarten or school, liking many aspects of being there.

The children tell us there is no trade-off for them between playing and learning. They like doing both. They also like being creative and building things, as well as being with their friends and teachers, being physically active and having times for eating, rest and unstructured activities. Additionally, being able to choose what they do, at least some of the time, is important for children and is positively linked to early skill development.
