Congratulations! You made it! Back to School has never been more important than this one. Despite all the noise, negativity and distractions in the media, you as education leaders, teachers, and parents stepped up and opened schools (in person and online) across Canada to welcome back your students.
It hasn't been easy and it's not going to be perfect. Courage and kindness are essential traits as you lead and teach given the fragile state of our learners during this pandemic.
Hope springs eternal during these most challenging times; it's at the heart of what we grasp to inspire all to thrive. Communication is paramount in these challenging times to put students, teachers and parents at ease. Leveraging simple video technology expands your reach and makes for immediate and impactful messaging. Perhaps one of the most notable leaders in Canadian education is Dr. Jordan Tinney, Superintendent & CEO, Surrey Schools. Watch here for some tips.
For further inspiration, be sure to checkout my recent MindShareTV podcast with Canada's very own, global education thought leader and best selling author of Innovator's Mindset, George Couros. I hope you enjoy our new format! At the College level, I checked-in with Dr. Sandy MacDonald, President, Holland College (PEI) to learn about their future visioning to meet the emerging needs of students and labour market to fill the skills gap. I welcome you to recommend future guests on our show!
I'm honoured to chair the 11th Canadian International EdTech Leadership Summit--The Future of Learning in Crisis and Beyond October 28-29, (hybrid delivery). Checkout our 'world-class' presenters! We are offering 50 Comp VIP passes (max 2 pp) to our MindShare Learning Community supporters. Simply tweet @Mindsharelearn which presenter you're looking forward to seeing and what you hope to gain. We're excited to be leveraging some of the latest technologies to virtualize our hybrid Summit to nurture collaboration amongst attendees, presenters and sponsors to promote deeper learning. Also new this year! All delegates will receive a professional learning credential that will be uploaded to the blockchain, courtesy of our partner Covergence.Tech.
The judges have spoken from our 12th Schools of the Future Challenge and Minecraft Canadian Storytelling Challenge. The Winners will be announced following next weeks return to school to allow all schools across Canada to get settled back in.
Welcome Hapara our newest EdTech solution partner, who helped make this Back to School edition possible. Be sure to checkout their award-winning classroom management solution whose team is led by Canadian education thought leader from B.C., Wayne Poncia, CEO.
We are especially grateful during these challenging times for the valued support of our sponsors, partners and advisory board members, and our team, who inspire excellence in everything we do and help make this report possible. You have our commitment that we will continue to pivot to add more insight and resources through innovative technologies.
Here's to a safe and successful September back to school. I know #youvegotthis and will make it special for your students to help them adapt and thrive in challenging times!
Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep! |

If you’ve been in education long enough, you will have encountered many different ‘digital learning and data platforms.’ These platforms entice potential partners with one or several modest characteristics for managing learning, especially assessment. However, you will note that many, if not most, of these platforms, lack the tools, intuitive interface, a deep understanding of data collection, assessment and communication management between all key stakeholders of a school community. Most of these platforms fall short of providing educators with a professional apparatus that follows modern assessment theory and communication protocols in a compact, simple, robust, and yet extensive package using the latest web technologies tweaked to meet the needs of teachers, students, and parents. You might even wonder if that’s possible. Well, it is, and its name is Edsby.

Much has been said and written about back to school. Now it's time where the rubber hits the road. Let's let the ed leaders and teachers do what they do best. This is not the first time in education that they've had to deal with a pandemic. Our passionate and dedicated educators are demonstrating courage and ingenuity to make the system work for kids.
Contact North is Raising the Bar for Innovation. While there's been no shortage of PD for educators this past summer, kudos to Contact North for focusing on the learner with their recent webinar, How to be a Successful Online Learner, hosted by Dr. Steve Joordens, UofT professor and a friend and colleague of ours. |
|
|
I was interested to learn the webinar garnered 700 plus participants. I think Contact North is on to something. There is a thirst to learn how to learn. It wasn't until I did my masters in EdTech at Pepperdine that we studied learning theorists and how to learn best.
I would further add a session for parents and how they can best support their kids learning. |

The future of learning is no longer restricted to four walls. As painful as the pandemic has been, we've seen many innovations emgerging thanks to technology powered pedagogy.
Buckle-up for massive change. In the next 12 months in education I predict well see a flurry of mergers, acquisitions and closures. A prospering education system is the lifeblood of society. The digital leap thrust upon teachers, professors and parents is showing cracks in systems that previously hung on to old models. Many EdTech Companies will thrive while others will struggle to get the attention of educators unless their solutios are deemed mission critical.
It is without a doubt the most exciting time to be in education with the promise and potential for new and innovative teaching and learning methods to support personalized learning
Yes, the factory model is back in some districts who are forced the province to embrace straight row desks and low tech teaching methods. This will see parents flock to other options online, home schooling, and yes innovative private schools.
Teachers are not replaceable but need the tools to teach and help students thrive.
I have received messages from teacher friends desperate for computers as the majority were given away in the spring to families in need. They are not being returned any time soon. This will put teachers' creative and innovative teaching practices to a test!
If you have any technology you are willing to lend, or donate. Please drop me a note as I have many educators who will put it to good use!
People on the move in Ontario! Congrats to Colleen Russell-Rawlins, who takes on the role of Permanent Interim Director of Education, Peel District School Board Dr. Debbie Donsky, who has recently taken on a Superintendent role with the Toronto District School Board. And welcome back to the GTA her former colleague, Dr. Tanya Sterling, who takes on a Superintendent role back at her former district in York Region. We will be featuring many more names from across Canada making their move up the ranks. Tom D'Amico, recently stepped into his new role as Director of Education, Ottawa Catholic School Board.
On the EdTech front, Prodigy Learning has made three significant hires to their executive team in Kulsum Qasim as Chief Marketing Officer, John Stetic as Chief Product Officer, and Jean-Luc Dery as Chief Technology Officer. This strategic investment in leadership will allow Prodigy to accelerate its growth at this pivotal moment for educational technology. as the look to raise the bar in education with their highly popular math gaming platform. A BIG part of their success has been adapting to where the kids are at with their game-based math learning platform. The school to home connection has made them an EdTech darling and a past Canadian EdTech Company of the Year Award winner. Stay tuned for BIG things to come from this Canadian EdTech darling!

On the breaking news front, I'm pleased to share this news from the OECD Secretary General on the importance of education amidst COVID-19 >> Education critical to build a more resilient society. “
Strengthening education systems needs to be at the heart of government planning to recover from this crisis and give young people the skills and competencies they need to succeed,” said OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría, launching the report in Paris. “It’s critical that every effort be made to ensure that the crisis does not exacerbate the inequalities in education that have been revealed in many countries. The current crisis has tested our ability to deal with large-scale disruptions. It is now up to us to build as its legacy a more resilient society.” |

I was honoured recently to be appointed back on the Board of Lingo Media, providers of English Language Learning (ELL) platform. This has a special place in my heart. I am proudly a first generation Canadian. My mother, Giovanna immigrated from Italy in the 50's and never had an opportunity to go to school during WWII as a child. She came to Canada illiterate as an adult. Despite this, my mom was a very wise woman and an inspirational storyteller, who did everything to support my education. Sadly, my mom passed a few years ago never learning to read or write. Perhaps this helps explain my passion for public education and supporting all learners through tech infused pedagogy, while embracing the notion of lifelong learning.
If you have an event or story to share, please tell us about it! We also encourage you to share your comments!
Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep!
