Dear Thought Leader,
All eyes will be fixed on B.C. this week as students returned to school Monday. Although attendance maximum is 50%, early reports are that numbers will be lower.
Not to be ignored, B.C. teachers have raised concerns over going back into the classroom which is totally understandable in light of COVID-19, according to CBC News.
In issue we spotlight West Vancouver's Superintendent & CEO, Chris Kennedy Video message and innovative parent resources and PD in preparation for back to school.
Be sure to checkout my exclusive podcast spotlight interview with fellow Canadian,
Dr. Vinay Singh, Founder & CEO, EdTech Startup Orange Neuroscience, producers of ReadOn, an award-winning adaptive AI reading platform for students with learning challenges.

In closing, I would be remiss if I didn't express our sympathies to the families of Regis Korchinski-Paquet and George Floyd. I'm hopeful that our Canadian education leaders will continue to place a strong emphasis on equality and anti-racism throughout their school systems. Black lives matter as we acknowledge and honour #blackouttuesday.
Until next time, stay healthy, stay safe, be mindful of social distancing, and keep the digital learning curve steep! |

"If we've learned anything from the series of events this week, including the deaths of Regis Korchinski-Paquet, George Floyd and others, it's that anti-Black racism is lethal."

1. Nelson to strategically withdraw from the post-secondary market with Top Hat to acquire its Canadian domestic higher ed textbook business
Cision: May 26, 2020 |
Nelson, Canada's leading educational publisher, announces today its strategic decision to withdraw from the post-secondary market. Nelson will now solely focus on the K-12 education market locally and globally. Since 1914, Nelson has played a key role in delivering world-class learning resources to K-12 and post-secondary communities. As the education landscape continues to shift, Nelson recognizes that these two markets are moving at different speeds. Each requires a core focus to ensure students and educators receive the right solutions to enable learning success.
Over the last two years, Nelson has disrupted the K-12 landscape with the launch of Edwin, a digital learning ecosystem that drives student engagement and outcomes. A singular focus on K-12 education will ensure students can successfully move forward into the next chapter of post-secondary education.

2. How do we re-open schools after the coronavirus pandemic?
OECD Education: May 27, 2020
Getting 1.5 billion students back to school will be a relief to parents and governments alike. Parents can go back to work, economies can begin to move. But the threat of future waves of coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak remains. As schools learn how to cope in this very different context there are many issues to consider such as supporting vulnerable students, ensuring equity and boosting capacity for online learning.
Some countries are only beginning to introduce measures to tackle the pandemic, others have already announced the lifting of some restrictions. Some schools for younger children reopened in Denmark last week and the same is due to happen in Norway this week. The right time for the schools re-opening is difficult to determine. Testing, tracking and tracing are a few of the methods discussed in the route to relax confinement restrictions.

3. Opinion: The digital divide threatens access to education |
Montreal Gazette: May 27, 2020
Throughout the initial phase of the COVID-19 health crisis, parents have been laughing through their homeschooling exasperation with memes such as: “Homeschooling is going well. Two students suspended for fighting and one teacher fired for drinking on the job” and “Homeschool Day 1: How do I get a kid transferred out of my class?” The experience has brought with it a newfound respect for teachers. While the humorous side of struggling to play the role of teacher may be shared, the experience of homeschooling in Montreal has differed dramatically depending on whether children are in the public or independent (private) school system. What is becoming clear is that, under COVID-19, the digital divide that separates one family from another is significantly affecting the quality of children’s educational experience and their opportunities for success. |

Unable to celebrate with his classmate due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, he was honored to address his peers.

5. Moving Forward in the COVID-19 Era: Reflections for Canadian Education
EdCan: May 6, 2020 |
In March of 2020, Canadian education systems first began to close schools in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In that relatively short (yet seemingly long) timeframe, however, the internet has been abuzz with webinars, instructional videos, live learning experiences, and free resources for teachers, parents, and students. Educational thought-leaders from around the globe have weighed in with blogs and articles on a host of topics and educators themselves have taken to Twitter, Facebook, and other social media outlets to document their experiences and share their challenges and successes in moving their practices towards various remote delivery models.
