2. Using technology to enrich the online learning experience

theglobeandmail.com: Spetmeber 29, 2020
King’s College School students who returned to the classroom this fall found an unfamiliar cylindrical object with owl-like eyes sitting atop their teacher’s desk.

“It’s a ‘Meeting Owl’ video-conferencing device with a 360-degree camera for a panoramic view of the entire classroom, and with a smartboard that displays images of the kids at home,” says Sandra Donovan, director of admissions at King’s College in Caledon, Ont., northwest of Toronto. “This way everyone can feel connected, wherever they are.”

3. Are students and educators learning during the pandemic?

policyoptions.org: November 3, 2020
The United Nations Secretary General has decried effects of the pandemic as a “generational catastrophe” in education. It’s clear, in the middle of the panic, politics and near-chaos of returning to school in the shadow of COVID-19, there are serious reasons to worry about the future of public education and especially today’s students.
4. Schools have mostly stayed open amid COVID-19, but experts warn of winter flu season ahead
cbc.ca: November 11, 2020

6. Digital Credentials and the Laws of Identity

Convergence.tech November, 2020
As I wrote in The Laws of Identity (2005), “the Internet was built without a way to know who and what you are connecting to”. This resulted in “a patchwork quilt of identity one-offs”. There has been considerable progress since then, but digital identity remains a problem in dire need of a better solution.Today none of us has our own “digital identity”. Instead, we end up with a jumble of so-called “identities” (mostly usernames and passwords) different for each website we visit, and identifiers controlled by our employers, our governments, and Internet giants like Google and Facebook. In other words, the patchwork quilt of identityone-offs, each usable only within its own realm,

7. Creative ways Canada’s business schools are revamping leadership courses for the COVID era
theglobeandmail.com: November 12, 2020

Since 2004, a week-long leadership retreat in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains has been a popular elective for business students at the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business.
Wind and solar engineer Phillip du Plessix was so keen that he scheduled the summer outdoor retreat as his final course of Haskayne’s evening Master of Business Administration program that he began in 2018. “I had been looking forward to that experience for the whole 2½ years,” he says.
Then the coronavirus hit last March. Without face-to-face instruction, Haskayne and other business schools with out-of-classroom experiences, including foreign trips and consulting projects, had to pivot quickly to virtual delivery.
8. The biggest risk isn’t too much change — it’s not enough

thespec.com: November 12, 2020
While the COVID-19 pandemic has brought much uncertainty into our lives, the sudden shift to working and learning online made one thing clear: Canadians must get comfortable with rapidly advancing digital technologies — or risk being left behind.

Digital transformation that might have taken years to achieve in the past is now, out of necessity, being undertaken in months, weeks or even days. Virtual platforms like Cisco Webex, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet and Zoom have instantly become the new boardroom, classroom and community gathering space, and everyone needs to pivot and adjust at lightning speed.
9. eCampusOntario, City of Toronto, the Government of Ontario and the Government of Canada Support New Partnership Model with Toronto’s Higher Education Institutions

finance.yahoo.com: November 9, 2020
Today, Dr. Robert Luke, CEO of eCampusOntario joined the Governments of Canada and Ontario and the City of Toronto to announce the launch of a new partnership that connects the City's research needs with Toronto's Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The pilot project matches researchers from colleges and universities to research needs identified by the City of Toronto as part of the COVID-19 response and recovery effort. Today's announcement launches the first eight research projects, all of which address COVID-19 recovery efforts.
"I am thrilled to see it coming to fruition", said Dr. Luke, who chairs the working group that created the partnership model. "At a time when cooperation is essential to mount the most effective pandemic response possible, our group worked together to co-design a streamlined process to support the City of Toronto research priorities, with incredible results. Our role in connecting campuses in this partnership model gives students valuable experiential learning opportunities, for which they can earn micro-credentials."
